Storage Space: What to Look for in a New Home

Did you know that the most valued asset for homebuyers in Canada is a walk-in closet? Yup, a survey of over 3000 homebuyers confirmed that walk-in closets are the kind of storage space people are looking for.

That’s why one of your tried & true tips for homebuyers is to never underestimate the value of closet & storage space.

Here are some of our tips when it comes to looking for storage in a potential new home!

1. Think about how much stuff you have.

Before looking at properties, take a look at all the things you currently own. Does your current home have an abundance of storage that you will need to replicate elsewhere? Does your current home not have enough space and therefore you haves stuff overflowing everywhere?

Evaluating what you have, including current storage, is a great way to figure out just how much space you will need at a new home.

Keep in mind that moving is an excellent opportunity to declutter and get rid of some things you no longer need. So keep that in mind when looking at new properties as well.

2. Don’t judge a closet by its owner.

Sometimes the issue isn’t that there’s not enough space, but that the area isn’t being utilized properly.

When viewing a home, try to separate the space from how the current owner is using it.

For example, closets can seem extremely small when they look cluttered and disorganized, but if you imagine organizational systems in the same space, does it become more functional?

You could have a huge closet space or basement storage, but if it’s not adequately organized, it may not look like enough room.

This is one of the reasons why a lot of realtors will stage closets when staging a home. It’s important to visualize proper organization to see a space’s true potential.

3. Older homes will likely have less storage space.

If you have a lot of stuff, maybe a home built in the 1950s isn’t for you. Older homes tend to have much less storage space. This includes smaller closets, laundry rooms, pantries, etc.

If you’re looking for maximum storage space, you need to look at homes built within the last 20 years. These homes will likely reflect the amount of space you’re looking for because they were designed with buyers like you in mind.

The moral of the story, don’t underestimate the importance of storage.

We all arguably have too much stuff, but it can be tough to part with things we have attachments to. When you move to a home that doesn’t have adequate storage space, you will always find yourself feeling disorganized and cluttered.

If you keep the above tips in mind when house shopping, you should be able to easily differentiate between homes with enough storage spaces and homes without.

Good luck!
